Have you found your drinking tap water taste a bit brackish lately? Since the beginning of 2021, more than half of Bangkok population are turning their water taps on to find that their water supply has unpleasant salty taste. The salinity standard of tap water production is set at 0.5 gram per liter. However, records showed that at the end of January 2021, the salinity level at Samlae water pumping station, which is the key source of tap water production for Bangkok and its vicinities, soared to as high as 2.53 grams per liter, or five times higher than the recommended standard. What is the cause of this threat? Is it related to climate change? Dr.Nattawin Chawaloesphonsiya, an environmental engineer at Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University, explains these issues in this episode.
