Mokens of Surin Islands in the Andaman Sea are one of the three sea nomadic tribes living in Thailand. They have initiated a beach clean-up project, but a lack of funding does not allow them to continue their activity. As Surin Islands were declared a national park in 1981, the Mokens could no longer continue their sea-nomadic way of living. They are not allowed to harvest the sea, or to gather from the forest. Could ecotourism help them sustain their living? And what is ecotourism? Speakers of this episode are Assoc. Prof. Dr. Narumon Arunotai, director of Social Research Institute, Chulalongkorn University, who runs a research unit on indigenous peoples and development alternatives, and Uttara Sarkar Crees, a veteran ecotourism and sustainable living planner, who is based in Yunnan, China.
